PSYD, LPC, CPCS Evening Program Director
Dr. Mary Gay is a Licensed Professional Counselor of GA in clinical practice since 1995 and a Certified Professional Counselor since 2013. She currently serves as the Program Director of The Summit Wellness Group’s Evening IOP Program. Additionally, she has a private practice at the Atlanta North Center for Change in Roswell, which she co-founded in 2000. Dr. Gay has studied, practiced, and lectured on addiction and developmental trauma for the last 15 years and has a particular interest in working with impaired professionals. She is a longstanding member of the American Counseling Association and the Licensed Professional Counselors Association of GA.
She recently co-founded the Southeastern Counselor Training Institute to share her knowledge and experience with other mental health professionals. Dr. Gay is drawn to working with addiction because of her own personal story of addiction and recovery. She believes that compassion and fundamental respect for the individual struggling with addiction is the cornerstone of effective substance abuse treatment.
The field of addiction treatment is changing rapidly in response to neurobiological advancements in the inter-related fields of attachment theory and developmental trauma. The research is showing that problems in the ability to manage boredom, loneliness, sadness and anxiety, often stemming from early experiences, are highly correlated with drug and alcohol use disorders. She is excited to utilize the latest in attachment and trauma research through her work at The Summit Wellness Group to assist our clients in learning how to manage emotions in sobriety through the power of supportive relationships.
Dr. Gay practices her own medicine by enjoying connections with family and friends and her 3 dogs. She also enjoys traveling, walking, hiking, and finding opportunities to belly laugh.
